The word spirit comes from the Latin word espiritus which means breath.
Air is vital to all life on the planet and it’s one of the only unseens that no one will argue. We all breathe it, it keeps our vital functions working and we feel it in the seasonal breezes.
Air is related to the Indian Prana, the Chinese Chi and what many consider be the divine life force.
In meditation, we are often asked to focus our attention on the breath as a way of disconnecting from mental chatter and coming into presence. And it is my understanding that divine presence, the present moment, is who and what we are.
Deep breathing is also the best choice when faced with fear or worry. The oxygen needed to keep the brain calm helps prevent fight or flight. It also prevents our bodies from being flooded with unnecessary cortisol, which is a steroid, stress hormone.
There are also some subconscious undertones attached air.
Think about man’s obsession with taking flight by developing technologies that allow this for humans. Air represents a certain freedom from restrictions.
