Aranda rubbed her eyes to adjust to the morning. The sound of her 6am alarm was always such an irritant. But this morning, there was an added level of anxiety. She had scheduled the day off from her job as cellular phone rep to ride with her parents and uncle to visit her grandmother at her family’s country home.
The house was up for sale and they were packing their grandmother up to move her from Virginia back to Jersey to live with the family. She was excited to have her grandmother closer. Her stress, however, was knowing that the home she grew up in, the home her family shared so many memories in, was about to be sold to some strange, young, newly wed couple.
“They don’t know anything about the house! They don’t know how to take care of the bannister. Paw Paw and his father built that bannister with their own two hands. It will fall apart if they don’t care for it properly!” Aranda complained on the car ride up.
Uncle Jasper took a sip of his morning coffee before merging onto the freeway and answered, “We told them about he bannister already. The husband is a general contractor. He knows how to fix things like that.”
