No, I don’t think that’s racist at all. That’s what tends to happen most of the time. I’ll be honest, for most of my life, black men have been my preference because of the cultural familiarity. But the older I get, I personally might try some new things. I watched the movie Loving and it sort of affected me and my biases.

But no, I don’t think it’s racist to prefer your own in terms of a partner. A lot of people choose to marry people of their same religion, or profession, etc. The familiarity thing is about safety.

It becomes racist to me if they date their own with the idea that another is inferior to them. But that’s different than the comfort of what you know and appreciate culturally. You have to remember that their are shared experiences and family values that are woven into culture. None better than another. Just different. That goes back to why not seeing race hurts, because our cultures values and contributions are big to us.

I appreciate this dialogue very much. The spirit of it is respectful, as if we’re just trying to understand each other’s POV. Thank you for the respect in which you ask. I’ve experienced similar questions in such ugly and demeaning ways.
