(Martin Season 2 Episode 18: Breaking down Martin’s first proposal to Gina)
I love a great script. Deep down, sitcoms and songs are why I write. I see so many scenes in my mind’s eye and the art of describing them in ways others can envision themselves in them is king to me. Part of the fun is breaking down symbols that are blended into them, like our own modern day mythology.
A well written and well directed scene can convey so many thoughts, emotions and realities. They can also offer something potent to think about. This particular scene is a great example of how a woman can take back her power in a relationship by choosing to love herself and honor her own needs.
The Setup
After Martin attends a wedding with his girlfriend, Gina, and friends, a heated discussion about marriage and the state of he and Gina’s relationship is called into question.
Starting to feel somewhat pressured, Martin’s ego keeps him from really looking at what he stands to lose by not having made his mind made up about a future with Gina.
Gina on the other hand has been presented with a better career opportunity to leave Detroit for New York. She loves Martin, passionately, and it’s clear that he loves her. But because he hasn’t been taking her feelings on the matter as seriously as…
